Synastry Chart Guide:
Reading Two Birth Charts for Love

A complete guide to understanding synastry aspects, house overlays, and the planetary connections that reveal romantic compatibility between two people.

What is a synastry chart?

A synastry chart is created by overlaying two natal birth charts on top of one another to see how one person's planets interact with another's. Rather than reading each chart in isolation, synastry reveals the dynamic between two individuals — where they harmonize, where they challenge each other, and what deeper themes their connection carries.

Astrologers have used synastry for centuries to assess the potential of romantic relationships, friendships, and partnerships. In the context of love, it remains one of the most detailed tools available for understanding why two people feel the way they do about each other.

"A synastry chart does not tell you whether a relationship will succeed. It shows you the energetic terrain — the gifts, the friction, and the deeper purpose — of two people meeting."

The most important synastry aspects

When two charts are overlaid, the angles formed between planets — called aspects — carry significant meaning. Some create ease and attraction; others create tension that can drive growth or conflict.

Conjunction (0°)

Intense merging of energies. Very powerful for attraction and connection, but can feel overwhelming depending on the planets involved.

Trine (120°)

Natural flow and ease between two planets. Creates harmony, comfort, and a feeling of being naturally understood.

Sextile (60°)

Gentle opportunity and support. Encourages growth and positive interaction between the two chart holders.

Square (90°)

Friction and challenge. Can create passionate tension or conflict. Often found in intense, transformative relationships.

Opposition (180°)

Magnetic pull paired with fundamental differences. Creates strong attraction and the need for balance between two contrasting energies.

Quincunx (150°)

Subtle adjustment and mystery. Creates a feeling that something is slightly off, requiring ongoing accommodation between the two people.

Key planet pairings in synastry

Sun–Moon connections

When one person's Sun conjuncts or trines another's Moon, there is often a deep sense of emotional comfort and natural understanding. The Moon person feels seen and nurtured by the Sun person, while the Sun person feels emotionally affirmed. This is one of the most stabilizing connections in synastry.

Venus–Mars aspects

Venus and Mars interaspects are the classic markers of romantic and physical attraction. A Venus–Mars conjunction is considered one of the strongest indicators of chemistry and desire. Even squares and oppositions between these planets tend to produce intense, magnetic pull — though they may also bring tension around values and desire styles.

Moon–Moon aspects

How two people's Moons relate speaks to emotional compatibility — whether they naturally understand each other's needs, feelings, and domestic rhythms. A trine or sextile between Moons often indicates easy emotional flow; a square can suggest differing emotional languages that require conscious effort to bridge.

Venus–Neptune aspects

These connections create idealization, romantic fantasy, and a sense of something fated or otherworldly about the relationship. They can be deeply romantic but also carry the risk of seeing the partner through rose-tinted lenses. Found frequently in soulmate-coded connections.

Saturn contacts

Saturn in synastry often gets a difficult reputation, but it is also one of the most important indicators of long-term commitment. When one person's Saturn connects with another's personal planets — especially the Sun, Moon, or Venus — it can create a sense of seriousness, responsibility, and durability in the relationship.

House overlays in synastry

Beyond aspects, where one person's planets fall in the other's chart houses tells a story about how they experience each other. For example:

7th house overlays — Planets falling in the other person's 7th house create a partnership-oriented, deeply relational dynamic. The planet person often feels like a natural life partner to the house person.

5th house overlays — Planets in the 5th house bring romance, playfulness, creativity, and a sense of joy and infatuation to the relationship.

12th house overlays — Among the most mysterious. Creates a feeling of soul-level recognition, past-life connection, and sometimes a hidden or private bond.

8th house overlays — Intensely transformative. Creates deep psychological pull, intimacy, and themes of merging, power, and emotional depth.

How to use synastry as a tool

Synastry is not a verdict. No single aspect determines the fate of a relationship. Instead, the synastry chart is best read as a map of the energetic terrain between two people — showing where things naturally flow, where effort is needed, and what themes the relationship is likely to bring to the surface.

The most revealing synastry readings look at the overall pattern: Are there many harmonious aspects alongside some challenges? Do the challenges feel generative or draining? Are there strong karmic signatures — North Node contacts, 12th house overlays, Neptune connections — that suggest the relationship carries a deeper purpose?

Used wisely, synastry offers a language for understanding and navigating love with greater clarity, empathy, and awareness.
